September 13, 2010 - New America's Cup Class & Rules

BREAKING NEWS: International sports’ oldest active trophy, The America’s Cup, has today announced historic changes to the boats and the event format for the 34th America’s Cup regatta and beyond. Most exciting, the new AC72 class of boat is a 72 foot (23m) wing-sailed catamaran! Many racing format changes have also been made to make the regatta more affordable for teams, more balanced and fair, less delays, and more TV and Internet media so the world can actually see these exciting crafts rip around on the water at 30+ knots. This is a HUGE paradigm shift to multihulls and Pete Melvin and the rest of the Morrelli & Melvin team have been working very hard with BMW-Oracle Racing and the AC rules committee to help create this exciting new AC72 class and rules. Congratulations to everyone on what will certainly be an exciting event to watch and a format that will push the sport back to the top of sailing technology and teamwork.
