TRIAK is frequently compared to the Hobie Adventure Island (AI). Both the TRIAK and Hobie AI are excellent, well designed, and quality boats. However, there are significant differences. If you're looking for a performance sailing oriented boat that is extremely dry and comfortable, then the TRIAK is by far the winner and right choice for you.

  TRIAK Hobie

Design

Designed from the ground-up as a performance sailboat and full paddle kayak. Co-designed in California by the World's top multihull yacht designers, Morrelli & Melvin. The Adventure Island is a Hobie Mirage kayak with outriggers and a sail added.
Construction Vacuum infused fiberglass with a honeycomb core. expedition tough, yacht club finish. Roto-molded plastic. Heavy.
Seating Raised, ergonomic seat. Very dry. Sit-on-top kayak. Wet.
Ride

TRIAK's narrow bow slices through waves and chop. The deck flange helps to deflect water and spray. Comfy and dry. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

TRIAK slices through chop for an extremely dry and comfortable experience.

Because it is a sit-on-top, the Hobie is a wet ride. A characteristic of the Hobie is nose diving. Better wear your booties and wet suit!

The Hobie Adventure Island can be a very wet experience.

Steering Fully adjustable foot pedals and large, foil rudder. Small plastic "joystick" controls a plastic rudder.
Dry Storage 158 liters. Enough for days of self-sustained camping. Virtually zero. (2) shallow 8" inspection ports.
Sailing Ability Excellent! Points 30-45 degrees into the wind at excellent speeds. Double-digit speeds. Great tacking and gibing. Great on a reach. Poor maneuverability and tacking. Must pedal through a tack.
Transport

The TRIAK is truly car-top friendly. The main hull unit is only 64 lbs, narrow, and slides on top of your car with Yakima or Thule racks. The wing and floats can go on top or inside depending on the vehicle.

1-2 TRIAKs can be transported on the roof of a car.

The Hobie really must be transported on a trailer. The amas are quite large and the boat is wide. Here is a photo of a typical transport situation. A trailer adds roughly $2,000 cost, must be stored, towed, insured, and registered yearly.

Typical trailer situation for a Hobie Adventure Island. Adds lots of costs and hassles.

Pedal vs. Paddle TRIAK offers a traditional kayak-like paddling experience. The boat glides effortlessly through the water and beaches gracefully. The Mirage Drive is truly remarkable. The drawbacks are the hand steering, weight and beaching ability.
