Sea of Cortez Expedition // News & Updates [ SPOT Location List ]

Wednesday - February 15, 2012
Tyler, Erik and Sarah arrived safely in Loreto last night. Today Tyler emailed this below summary and some great teaser photos from he and Erik Boomer. More to come. Great work guys! What an amazing trip!

The general flow of the trip:

We started in Bahia de Kino, Sonora and began the expedition with the mid drift crossing, about a 60 nautical mile crossing broken up by a chain of islands. We hadn't had much time in the boats previously so it took a little getting used to. We got it handed to us straight out of the gate with a big North wind that picked up and the first day we didn't even get out of sight of where we started. During the following week we crossed through the mid drifts waiting out strong Northerlies on two of the islands. We had a crazy seal encounter where we got stormed by about a hundred seals. They were not stoked as we were trying to find a place to land needing to repair Sarah's boat after she collided with a reef. We camped that night in a cove on the North end of the island and after a satalight call to a friend checking the weather for us we learned that some strong Northerlies were about to hit. We spent another two days stormed out in the cove exposed to the North swell. It got harry as the waves continued to grow pounding what little beach we had with powerful closeout shore break. We got backed into a little nook of the cove and spent a sleepless night watching the waves wash away our little piece of land. Luckily things subsided and we finished up the crossing and arrived at a little place called San Fransanscito Bay where we re-stocked on water and food for the trip south. Things fell into a rhythm of traveling and camping. At times we had some stout headwinds impeding our progress and other days it was dead calm and we had to earn our miles the hard way. Other times we had ripping winds perfect for sailing and flew down the coast doing between 5 and 7 knots. We were able to average between 15 and 20 nautical miles a day and restocked at Mulege and Santa Rosalia en route to Loreto. We caught fish almost everyday, got to kite a few different days and the winds started to become more and more favorable as we went along. We ended yesterday in Loreto covering about 300 nautical miles in 25 days. Cant thank you all enough for your support! Looking forward to future adventures.

Kind regards,

Sarah, Boomer, and Tyler
